Ceramic valves were introduced as an upgrade to compression valves to avoid common leaks caused by worn out rubber washers and damaged faucet seats. Ceramic valves last substantially longer than traditional compression style valves found in many commercial faucets due to their elimination of rubber washers and use of high performance ceramic disks.
